Genmoji button missing from the keyboard, stuck on “downloading support for Genmoji”, or gone after an update? These seven fixes cover every known cause, ordered by how often each one turns out to be the problem.

Fix Genmoji not showing up
- Confirm your iPhone can run itGenmoji needs Apple Intelligence: iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max or any iPhone 16/17, on iOS 18.2 or later (iOS 26 included). iPhone 15 (non-Pro), 14 and older can’t run it — no setting changes that. See the per-model section below.
- Turn on Apple IntelligenceSettings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → enable Apple Intelligence. If you see a waitlist or “preparing” state, leave the phone on Wi-Fi and charging; the on-device models download in the background.
- Turn on Stickers in keyboard settingsSettings → General → Keyboard → make sure Stickers (Memoji Stickers on older builds) is on. When it’s off, the emoji panel hides the whole sticker row — including the Genmoji button — even though Apple Intelligence is working. This is the fix most people miss.
- Check language and regionApple Intelligence must support your device language. If it’s unavailable, set Siri and device language to a supported one (English works everywhere it’s offered), then restart.
- Free up storage so the download can finishThe Apple Intelligence models need roughly 7GB free. Under 10GB free, downloads often stall silently at “downloading support for Genmoji” — clear space, then check Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri again.
- Lift Screen Time and Low Power restrictionsSettings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Intelligence features: allow Genmoji. Then turn off Low Power Mode — it pauses the model download and can hide the button until the phone is charged.
- Restart and retryAfter any change: restart the iPhone, open Messages, tap the emoji keyboard and look for the Genmoji button at the top of the emoji panel. If it’s still missing, toggle Apple Intelligence off and on once to re-trigger setup.
“Downloading support for Genmoji” stuck?
This message means the on-device Apple Intelligence models are still coming down. The download only progresses under specific conditions, which is why it can look frozen for hours:
- Wi-Fi required — it won't download over cellular.
- Power — plug the phone in, or keep the battery comfortably charged; Low Power Mode pauses it.
- Storage — the models need ~7GB; below ~10GB free, downloads stall silently.
- Patience — 15–60 minutes on fast Wi-Fi is normal; overnight on the charger almost always completes it.
Still stuck after all four? Restart the phone, then toggle Apple Intelligence off and on in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri to re-trigger the download.
Genmoji not showing up on your specific iPhone
Most “it’s not showing up” reports come down to the model. Here is what to expect on each one — and what to do if yours is on the wrong side of the line.
iPhone 17
Fully supported on the iOS it ships with. If the button is missing, it is almost always fix 3 (Stickers toggle) or fix 5 (models still downloading after setup). New phones restore from backup with Apple Intelligence off — check fix 2 first.
iPhone 16 / 16 Plus / 16 Pro
Supported on iOS 18.2 and later. The common failure is updating to iOS 26 and finding the button gone: the models re-download after a major update, so leave it charging on Wi-Fi for an hour before trying anything else.
iPhone 15 and 15 Pro
Only the Pro and Pro Max support Genmoji. The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus use the A16 chip, which Apple Intelligence does not run on. If you have a non-Pro 15, no setting or update will add it — use the web alternatives instead.
iPhone 14 and older
Not supported, on any iOS version. The “Genmoji” you may have seen in a friend’s Messages arrives as an ordinary sticker image on your side, which is why you can receive them but not make them. The free emoji maker and emoji combiner work on any iPhone in Safari.

Why is Genmoji not showing up on my iPhone?
The four usual causes, in order: your device doesn’t support Apple Intelligence (needs iPhone 15 Pro or newer), Apple Intelligence isn’t enabled in Settings, the Stickers toggle in keyboard settings is off, or the on-device models are still downloading. Work through the 7 fixes above in that order.
What does “downloading support for Genmoji” mean and how long does it take?
It means the on-device AI models that generate Genmoji are still downloading. On fast Wi-Fi it typically takes 15–60 minutes, but it only proceeds while the phone is on Wi-Fi, charging or well-charged, and has enough free storage (~7GB). If it’s stuck for hours: plug in, connect to Wi-Fi, free up storage and restart.
Why is Genmoji greyed out or missing in Messages?
If Apple Intelligence is on but the Genmoji button is missing from the emoji keyboard, check the Stickers toggle in Settings → General → Keyboard, then Screen Time restrictions (Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → Intelligence features), disable Low Power Mode, and confirm a supported region and language. A restart after changing settings is often required.
Does Genmoji work on iOS 26?
Yes. iOS 26 keeps Genmoji and adds the ability to mix two existing emojis or combine an emoji with a text description. The requirements are unchanged: an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone (15 Pro or newer) with Apple Intelligence turned on. If it disappeared after updating to iOS 26, the model download usually just needs to finish — plug in on Wi-Fi.
Why does Genmoji refuse to generate my prompt?

How do I delete a Genmoji I created?
Open the emoji keyboard in Messages, touch and hold the Genmoji in the stickers/frequently-used area, then choose Remove. Genmoji you delete disappear from the keyboard but not from old messages where you already sent them.
My iPhone can’t run Genmoji — what’s the alternative?
