When to reach for the combiner

Combined emojis say things single emojis can't: a crying cat in the rain, a party avocado, coffee-powered skull energy. People use emoji mashups as reaction images, Discord and Slack custom emojis, story stickers and profile accents.

Overlay or side-by-side: which layout to pick

Overlay is the mashup mode. One emoji sits on top of the other, and the size, position and opacity sliders decide how much of the base shows through. It works best when the two emojis have different silhouettes — a face plus a small object (🐱 + 🎩, 💀 + ☕) reads instantly, because the object lands as an accessory rather than a collision. Two round faces overlaid on each other usually turn to mush.

Side-by-side keeps both emojis whole and legible. Use it when the pairing is the joke rather than the drawing — 🐟 next to 🚲, or two characters reacting to each other. It also survives being shrunk to 28 pixels far better than an overlay does, which matters for chat emoji.

How this compares to Emoji Kitchen, Genmoji and emojimix

There are four ways to end up with a merged emoji, and they are good at different things:

The trade-off is coverage versus polish. Emoji Kitchen results look better than anything a compositor can produce, because a designer drew each one — but only the pairs Google chose exist, and the pair you want often is not among them. This combiner has no such list: every emoji works with every other emoji, and you control the framing. Combining emojis on iPhone and Android

Neither platform merges emojis natively in the way people expect. On Android, Gboard's Emoji Kitchen suggests mashups above the keyboard while you type, but only for supported pairs. On iPhone there is no keyboard integration at all — Genmoji is the closest equivalent and it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer running iOS 18.2 or later.
